The Blasphemous Implications of Mormon Doctrines

I do not write this to be sensational. (You will notice that this article isn't even listed in the general article index.) I love the Lord Jesus Christ and have served Him my whole life. I can honestly say I hate the things God hates. It is that HATRED and DISGUST that leads me to expose the evil I see for what it is. I know God hates blaspheming. I have come across teachings again and again that I believe to fit that category, and I appeal to any reading this who claim to love God to take your stand against this insidious, demonic thinking which God hates. Here are examples, but the list is far from complete.

1. Joseph Smith said, "I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him, but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet." History of the Church, vol. 6, pages 408-409.

WHAT?  Did Jesus, our omnipotent, almighty God have a power failure? How DARE he compare himself to Christ in such a way! The fact is Jesus Christ HAS kept His church together for 19 centuries...just as he SAID he would in Matthew 16:18, (see article on Apostasy and restoration) but Smith's final actions in his life led to his murder and splintering of his baby church. God hates boasting in general, but Smith's form of boasting was.... BLASPHEMY!

2. The LDS church suggests that once a total apostasy caused the withdrawal of true authority when the Apostles died, the shell of a church was left for some 1700+ years without authority and with only a corrupted, partial truth package. There was no true church on the earth. Only when Smith was on the scene could the church be restored. This brings to my mind a picture of Jesus Christ up in heaven pacing back and forth while centuries of world history goes by year after year, in a state of blindness and darkness.... choosing to let it happen...not being able to figure out what to do about the problem. Is this a power failure? I think not. Was it a matter of not KNOWING He could have chosen someone at ANY MOMENT (Smith, being in the pre-existence?) to send to earth in order to restore the church? It took 1700 years to come up with a plan?  Of course not! Was it a matter of seeing the world as a whole in rebellion and feeling they did not DESERVE the restoration? Well, THAT is just as blasphemous an idea as the others I have mentioned. If the giving of truth depended on mankind being deserving of it, we would never ever have had any given! God long ago put all humans in the same category: For all have sinned and come short (literally, keep on coming short) of the glory of God...for there is NONE RIGHTEOUS, NO, NOT ONE. (Romans 3:10,23) But this was God's verdict spoken right after the giving of the new covenant! If you think through the LDS view, it is like Jesus was saying, "I can't give you the medicine till you get well."   We already know that most of the human race is going to reject God (Matthew 7:13-14). But God has always had a people to follow Him, even when His prophets thought there was a "total apostasy" -- see Romans 11:2-5. And His PROMISE to the world is that His truth will endure to all generations (Psalm 100:5).

Christ is said to be the nourisher and cherisher of the church in Ephesians 5:29. That means He FEEDS it what it needs to grow. LDS have presented a scenario in which Christ (by withdrawing His authority and not preventing the loss of truth) has effectively STARVED His bride to death..... and I say that is..... BLASPHEMY!

This has been explained to me as a needed reaction to the sinful rebellion of many or all of God's people.  Seems unlikely because by the end of the book of Acts the church numbered perhaps around 20,000 (several places in the book speak of the church "multiplying").   Yet one proof text they cite me in Acts 20:28 talks about wolves in sheep's clothing that come in to destroy the church. So who are the real bad guys in this scene? The Christians or the false teachers? How lovely of Christ to REWARD the false teachers and PUNISH the victims by killing the church! The truth is a remedy was given in that passage and assurance that these people could stay true to the Word of God's grace.  So would it not be a victory for the wolves if this  "total apostasy"  had occurred?  Is it not .... BLASPHEMY?

3. Scenes from the temple. I have long had a policy of not talking about what goes on in there out of deference to LDS. But the fact is they are IGNORANT of the evil involved and need someone to force them to think through what they have been a part of, and warn the others against being a part of it.

A. The creating of the world (in the drama) is allegedly done by Elohim (only from a directorial distance) and Jehovah (they equate this name to Jesus, and I won't argue that), and MICHAEL.... an ANGEL. Wait a minute. Angels are CREATED BEINGS. What an insult to God to suggest that that which He MADE needed to assist Him in His creative work when He has stated that He did it ALONE! (This is also an argument for the Tri-unity of God - Isa. 44:24). God will NOT share the GLORY DUE HIM for His magnificent creation with any lower creature!

B. The actual work of creating is done by Jehovah and Michael, and after they are done, they go back and tell Elohim what they if He didn't know. God is omni-present. Why would they need to tell him anything? The Elohim of the temple drama is NOT the all-knowing God of the Bible.  And how did MICHAEL, a CREATED BEING become
a creator?

C. The creation is not a creation but a reorganizing of matter. This reduces God to a copy-cat. (Remember, other worlds existed before this one where other men became gods.) The Bible states in John 1:1-4 and Col. 1:16-17 that Jesus is the creator of all things, visible and invisible, and that NOTHING was created without His involvement. Further, it reduces the following scriptures to empty bragging:

"I have made the earth, and created man upon it; I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded." Isa. 45:12

"I am the Lord that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself." Isa. 44:24

Think about it. God (they say) was a man HIMSELF once... how could He then take credit for creating man? Oh, I have heard the arguments they present... but it is only by twisting the clear meaning of scripture, and reading thoughts into it that are not there that they can justify this.....BLASPHEMY.

Was God once a man? Joseph Smith's King Follett sermon stated that you have to learn to become gods yourselves, just as all gods before you have done. Well...if ALL gods were first men, who lived on some sort of earth, tell me who made sure there was a "just-right" earth for them to live on with food, water, right temperature, etc? THAT would have involved someone with a LOT of smarts and ability to orchestrate! Who WAS that guy? LDS don't even know His name, but the Bible tells us ELOHIM was the ORIGINAL and ONLY creator...He calls himself the first, the last, and the only God. (Isaiah 44:6,8, 45:5). To believe any other god exists is....BLASPHEMY!

D. In the temple, SATAN is practically a star. He does a lot of explaining of LDS doctrines. (Hmm... what he says is what LDS believe...there is a lesson here). I take exception to his even BEING a part of the drama, let alone being cast "center-stage" so to speak. In the Biblical temple's holy place, only the High Priest could enter, and great pains were taken to be sure the temple and those who entered were properly cleansed. Think about it... whose temple is it?

E. One of the teachings Satan presents (and LDS believe to be true) is that God had to eat of some forbidden fruit in His past life in order to gain the knowledge to become a god. I say that is blasphemy. It is bad enough to suggest He was once a man...but to say He also SINNED against some other God? I absolutely HATE THIS THOT! It is sick, sick, sick! God is and always has been a holy, sinless, perfect, unchangeable God. There has never been a time when he was not all-knowing (omniscient). Another subtle suggestion of a possibly less-than-perfect God is a statement in Alma 42:22 and 25 that if justice did not exist with God that He would cease to be God. WHERE in the WORLD would such an idea come from, other than the pit? Would God author such a negative suggestion? The fact is that even if God DID choose to be an unjust God...He would still be  God. Why? There IS no being or law that can demote Him. NO OTHER GOD LIKE GOD EXISTS! To claim to be omnipotent means no one has power over Him. And He has declared himself to be the ETERNAL God. Even LDS scripture states "From everlasting to everlasting thou art God"  (Moroni 18:18) In spite of that this doctrine of eternal progression belittles and demotes  God to one of many who climbed a ladder, and it is just plain.... BLASPHEMY!

F. Still in the temple... Satan (Lucifer) is done tempting Eve (and Adam) and Elohim curses him to crawl on his belly. Satan replies:

"If thou cursest me for doing the same thing which has been done in other worlds, I will take the spirits that follow me, and they shall possess the bodies thou createst for Adam and Eve."

God then prophesies of the enmity between the seed of the woman (Christ) and Satan. And Satan again talks back:

"Then with that enmity I will take the treasures of the earth, and with gold and silver I will buy up armies and navies, false priests who oppress, and tyrants who destroy, and reign with blood and horror on the earth."

Hmmm... he's on quite a POWER TRIP, wouldn't you say? Just what is THIS supposed to be telling us? Note that he doesn't seem afraid of God, and the drama portrays his tempting Adam and Eve to sin as if it were a good thing. God then says to him, "Depart." He walks out... he doesn't crawl ...(remember God's curse of crawling in the dust, found in Genesis?) yet this "serpent" just walks out. So who is the hero here? To me this portrayal of Satan is....BLASPHEMOUS? God is ALWAYS stronger than Satan and what God commands Satan to do... he  MUST   do!

G. Satan also THREATENS the temple patrons... if they don't walk up to (live up to?) their vows, he says, they will be in HIS power. Well... I've figured out that this is really what is accomplished in the temple put people under Satan's power by making them vow vows they can't keep....when God has said in Ecclesiastes 5:5 it is better not to vow than to make a vow and not keep it. It is pretty poor ethics too, to make the patrons take vows when they have not seen them in writing in advance and studied them, to be sure they are doing this of their own free will and understanding, determining whether they feel they CAN live up to them. Is this what you would expect to find in the place of God's presence? A devil threatening your spiritual life? A requirement to make vows you are unfamiliar with? This is just the opposite of how God deals with His children. He says that He is greater than Satan...that He will NEVER leave nor forsake us...that we are His forever...His cherished possession...and that His gift of eternal life is ALREADY OURS through our faith.  (Rom. 6:23, John 5:24) Can you not see that the "god" of the temple is simply NOT the God of the Bible? To say that he is, is....BLASPHEMY!

4. It is said that Jesus and Lucifer were both "spirit children" of Heavenly Father in the pre-existence. This is a simple confusion of the creator with the creation. We are told in Colossians 1:16-17 that Jesus is the creator of all PRINCIPALITIES and POWERS. That "all" includes Lucifer. The creator is not brother to that which he creates. The image of a "child" (Jesus) born in heaven is in itself blasphemous, for it infers that Jesus was less than equal with God in all respects from all eternity. It infers there was a time when Jesus did not have a conscious existence (before being "born" to heavenly father). John 1:1-2 indicates that in the beginning Jesus was already in existence. He in fact existed before time's ages...(II Tim. 1:9, study the word "world" really means perpetuity, or eternality) thus no other father-god existed in some past AGE in some past world to precede the existence of Jesus AS GOD. He has ALWAYS been God, even when clothed with human likeness.

5. SCRIPTURE-tampering. Though I could cite LOTS of examples here, I'll just deal with two of the most blatant ones... Take a look in a King James Version Bible at Romans 4:5 and 4:16. One states that God DOES justify the ungodly and the other that our inheritance in Christ comes by faith. In the Joseph Smith (corrected) version words have been added, so that it states that God does not justify the ungodly....and that our inheritance comes by faith and works. The latter idea sounds OK...until you read the rest of it. (KJV:) It is of faith (only) so that the promise might be SURE to all the seed. When Smith added his "and works" phrase, he not only reversed the meaning, he turned the verse into doubletalk. If our promise of eternity with God comes thru works, then we CANNOT be sure of it. Think about it, and you will see that Smith didn't correct anything, he PERVERTED it.  He REVERSED the meaning.   The FACT is that we have thousands of copies of early manuscripts to compare to one another in oder to verify what the original text said.   NOWHERE in any of them are there any suggestions of these changes.  Now back to Romans 4:5.

If you think about it, this change clearly typifies the difference in the plan of salvation between what Christians believe and Mormons believe. If you study out this verse in both versions, you will see that this additional "not" ALSO turns the whole flow of thoughts in the context into doubletalk. But beyond that...the fact is that if God does not justify people who are ungodly before that act....NOBODY will be justified. You see...that is why we NEED his shed blood to cleanse us...because we are NOT sinless, holy, or just. We all, if we are honest, stand before God as UNholy people. He has said so - Romans 3:10. And short of becoming sinless (James 2:10), we cannot change that verdict. That is why we need the promise of a God who, by GRACE (Rom. 3:24) FREELY justifies us BEFORE we meet any performance level requirement. But let me get off the doctrinal soapbox long enough to simply state that it takes some kind of guts to literally REVERSE the gospel message! Quite frankly I feel sorry for Smith. I'm sure he realizes by now that what he did was.... BLASPHEMOUS!

6. One further example of how LDS demote God is seen in Doctrine and Covenants 76:95 where it speaks of humans becoming EQUAL in POWER AND DOMINION to God. Now if God is what He SAYS He is (omnipotent), that means He has power over EVERYTHING and EVERYONE... and thus for us to be equal in power would mean we had power over HIM as much as He had over us--and thus he would then not be ALL-powerful. See what I mean? It is both illogical and... BLASPHEMOUS! See Eph. 1:21.

7. A good number to stop on. The notion that our Bible has been corrupted in even part of its major doctrinal content (the gospel) as stated in I Nephi 13 is in my opinion an attack against the character of God. He promised to preserve it...He said he was giving us all we need for life and godliness... that we might be fully equipped unto all good works. See Psalm 100:5, Matt. 5:18, 24:35 and I Peter 1:23-25 which show God's word ENDURETH.

He also said in Psalm 138:2 that He has exalted His WORD above all His name. In other words.... if you attack or condemn or question the written are attacking, condemning/questioning GOD. Think about what Jesus' attitude toward the scriptures was. He used them as his authority. He never corrected them. He based arguments at times on a single WORD in the text. And He said the scriptures cannot be broken. (John 10:35) He did not mean a Biblical command cannot be broken...of course it can. He meant their authority cannot be discredited. I say to you, LDS reader, quite earnestly, that you may THINK you've discredited it, but you are basing your views on second-hand opinions, not first-hand knowledge and facts. The manuscript evidence stands as a testimony against LDS views on this subject. (See Apostasy and Restoration article).  LDS need to be warned that the day will come when they may find they have been fighting against GOD HIMSELF --  If you are a Latter-Day Saint, be warned that if you do not reject these blasphemous doctrines, you will lose...everything!
